The Town of Mount Pleasant’s Senior Center opened its doors to the public for an educational 10-year anniversary celebration and open house. The center offers a variety of creative arts, cultural and recreation programs in the heart of Mount Pleasant to individuals over the age of 50.

“We have members that are in their 90’s, what an inspiration,” said Sherrie Pompeii, senior center coordinator. “Everybody here has a goal of enriching their lifestyle. So, we kind of help pump each other up to get to that goal.”

Pompeii has been involved with the center for five years. She shared that seeing different generations learn from each other at the center is inspirational. From resistance training to playing ping pong she said the seniors here do it all.

The facility is equipped with an arts and crafts room, library, yoga room, fitness and aerobics rooms, café, screened in porch, card room and more.

“The senior center comes under the town’s recreation department. Prior to the senior center, we had a number of recreation facilities and programs. None were donated specifically for our growing senior population,” explained Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, one of the founders of the senior center. “We felt that the senior center is one way to address some of the needs of senior population from a holistic point of view.”

The center is named after Stokes-Marshall. She went on to explain that the lunch and learn events they offer at the senior center are a valuable resource to seniors in the Mount Pleasant community. “At the senior center, we have these different classes that focus on different issues that impact the quality of life for our seniors.

Hundreds of individuals gathered at the senior center for the festivities. Guests were invited to tour the facility to learn about all of the programs and social activities offered. There was food, drinks and giveaways at the event. The center is looking forward to keeping seniors in motion for many more years.
