You know that Sullivan’s Island is a wonderful quiet beach destination and the perfect place to retire and own real estate if you value a slower pace of life — but did you know that it is also sport fishing destination? If you’ve always thought the island was gorgeous, but maybe that it didn’t offer quite enough for you to do in your retirement, think again! Not only does owning Sullivan’s Island real estate put you within half an hour of the airport and beautiful historic Charleston, but there is plenty to do without leaving the island as well.

Sullivan’s Island is the only stop in South Carolina for the 2012 Saltwater Classic Series kingfish fishing tournament. The event is set to take place on August 3–4, 2012 — the week before the big PGA Championship at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course (August 9–12, 2012). What an excellent precursor to the golf! You can compete in the event, or you can treat it as a spectator sport and watch the weigh-in on Saturday.

For anglers planning to compete, day-of registration takes place on Friday, August 3, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The cost for on-site Friday registration is $350. In addition to national charily organizations, some proceeds from the event will benefit the Sullivan’s Island Fire Department. The total purse and number of cash prizes awarded will be based upon the number of paid entries. Fishing will start on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m.

For those wishing to watch the weigh-in, it opens at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at “Big Shed,” 1459 Hennessey Street, which is the tournament headquarters. All anglers must be in line for weigh-in by 5:00 p.m. Awards will be announced at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The Sullivan’s Island event is the fourth stop for the Saltwater Classic series, which held Florida tournaments in Fort Myers (May 18–20), St. Pete (June 1–3) and Jacksonville (July 6–7), and is scheduled to stop in North Carolina at Brunswick Island (August 31–September 1) and Atlantic Beach (September 13–15). Hope you enjoy all the outdoor recreation offered at Sullivan’s Island and beyond! Let me, Bob Brennaman, know if you have any questions about local real estate, life on Sullivan’s Island or anything else related to retiring to the Charleston area — 843-345-6074.
